Altmark-Käserei Uelzana GmbH Bismark

With the establishment of the Altmark Käserei Uelzena GmbH Bismark (cheese factory) and the construction of a new cheese factory in 1992, a long tradition of milk processing in the Altmark was continued. The firm, which is known beyond Germany's borders, belongs to the Uelzena corporate group based in the Lower Saxony town of Uelzen.

The Edam and Gouda-type sliced cheese produced in Bismark is made in 15 kg blocks and supplied through marketing partners to food-slicing companies in the wholesale trade and to the food industry, as well as being prepared for export throughout Europe. Behind this sliced cheese-producing factory, which is equipped with modern technology, are milk-producing farmers from the Altmark and the Wendland, and from as far away as Lüneburg Heath. The good and successful cooperation between milk producers, milk processing and the marketing partners provides a solid, long-term basis for the continuation of milk production and processing in these heavily agricultural regions.

In mid-1996 the construction of a new butter factory was started at the Bismark location. The production of butter began in July 1997. In both production departments the processing capacities were increased steadily through further investments and rationalisations. Although at the time the projected capacity of the cheese factories was 20,000 tonnes of sliced cheese per year, production has now risen to more than 30,000 tonnes. The capacity of the butter factory has even doubled from its initial level of 10,000 tonnes per year, with a total of 20,000 tonnes of high-quality butter leaving the factory in Bismark in October 2014 on its way to the customers. In March 2012 the four hundred and fifty thousandth tonne of sliced cheese since the start of production in 1993 was made.

90 employees, including 10 apprentices, ensure a smooth production process in the three-shift system on 365 days a year, as well as the production of high-quality cheese and butter products. The firm Altmark-Käserei Uelzena GmbH Bismark lives through the employees who work at the company. They make a significant contribution to the success of the company. That is why one of the most important tasks is acquiring the next generation of employees. For the interesting field of milk processing and the manufacture of dairy products, milk technologists, dairy laboratory technicians, mechatronics engineers and food technologists (male and female) are trained every year.
